Shooting 48 MegaPixel Stills with iPhone 14 Pro

There’s no doubt that Apple continues to make incredible improvements year on year, when it comes to their latest iPhone. One of the obvious headline features that comes to subject to constant upgrade each year is of course the camera. Apple have always been known as class leaders in the mobile / smartphone photography industry, with both their computational and colour science bringing the tiny sensors to life. This is no different, and honestly to me, this is representative of one of the biggest upgrades to Apple’s flagship iPhone since the introduction of the triple lens setup in the iPhone 11 Pro.

This all comes down to the 48 Megapixel sensor, that features in the the main wide camera of the iPhone 14 Pro. If you’re shooting in normal JPEG or HEIC files, this sensor samples down into a final 12MP resolution image, for the conservation of space. But when you’re shooting in RAW, like I do, this is where the real magic happens. My daily driver prior to this particular iPhone was the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I love it, especially as it was the first iPhone to bring RAW capabilities to the iPhone.

iPhone 14 Pro x Summer Sunset - Telephoto

Labelled Apple ProRaw, enabling photographers to take their photos to new depths and heights with so much flexibility when it came to the edit. I’ve captured some of my favourite iPhone images on my 12 Pro Max, the iPhone shoots images straight out of the camera in RAW at such a great base level, to work on as a starting point, but then keeps a whole heap of data to then play with later. As a result, edited photos looked stunning. However, I’ve always been bothered by Apple’s tendency to over-sharpen images, to make up for the fact that the iPhone after all (like every smartphone out there) uses such a tiny sensor, compared to mirrorless and DSLR cameras out there.

So, that’s the one thing that always bothered me when shooting on iPhone. 12 Megapixels was not enough, when you zoomed in digitally or put an image up on a larger canvas at home, the resolution just never held up. For my personal tastes at least, and yes, resolution ain’t everything, the quality of the image is. I 100% agree, BUT, with smartphones, you do need as much weight on your side as possible.

iPhone 14 Pro x Summer Sunset. Wide 48MP.

Anyway, enter the iPhone 14 Pro. With a 48MP Wide, 12MP Ultra Wide and Telephoto, to create a system of cameras that I adore, and love shooting with. The 48 Megapixel wides, are jaw dropping and gorgeous, with so much quality deeply imbedded in each image. It’s genuinely the first time I can zoom right into the pictures, and look from afar and be confused to whether or not the photos were captured on a smartphone. Especially paired with my “Bright Summer iPhone Preset” for lightroom.

The photos are just gorgeous. Take a look at the gallery below, in combination of this, alongside ProRes, 4K Cinematic mode. This is a camera first, multiple cameras first, and then a phone. Period.
